Meet Justin Hughey
My family instilled in me a strong sense of public service, not private gain. I am invested in the community and would love to serve the working families of Kahakuloa, Waihee, Waiehu, Puuohala, Wailuku and Waikapu. We are facing many issues today and I believe government can be part of the solution when one of your own, is a legislator. Our community needs someone who is going to protect our magnificent environment as well as labor with its working families. I will vote with the concerns of the people and not special interests.
Actions speak louder than words.
As a teacher at King Kamehameha III Elementary in Lahaina, I’ve experienced problems with dilapidated buildings, too few teachers, and meager funding for education. I was motivated to do something about these conditions by taking an active role in the teachers union and eventually rose to the the vice presidency of the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
The upcoming draconian Janus Supreme Court decision could change the political landscape by busting public sector unions. There has always been a small group of legislators who are against collective bargaining and they might feel emboldened by an adverse decision. Labor is dying and working families need pro-labor legislators now more than ever.
I strive to have integrity and morale courage. My ultimate goal is for working families on Maui to have a quality education, be provided with affordable housing, live in a clean non-toxic environment and be provided opportunities to earn a livable wage without being discriminated by sex and ethnicity, while working less than forty hours a week.
